The NLCVA was formerly known as the Electronic Campus of Virginia or ECVA. The ECVA was established in 1997 at the request of the Virginia Business Higher Education Council. Our founding members created a website with online courses from participating institutions, and we also adopted our bylaws. The following is a list of the NLCVA’s major milestones:

- 2001: Consultation Report to the Electronic Campus of Virginia; consultation and report sponsored by the selected members of Virginia’s Council of Presidents.
- 2001: Download the white paper on Virginia Educational Ventures (VEV) white paper, public dialogue and FAQs sponsored by ECVA.
- 2002 – 2004: At request of ECVA, legislation proposed to establish VEV and Learning Technology Advisory Committee (LTAC); Tom Rust, patron.
- 2004: Establishment of LTAC at SCHEV.
- 2005: What’s Next for Virginia’s E-Learning Environment? Conference Sponsored by ECVA, see the Agenda and Proceedings for November 15, 2005
- 2007:Learning by Design Conference, sponsored by SCHEV, LTAC, ECVA; Richmond.
- 2008: New Times, New Pedagogies Conference featuring Michael Wesch and Sarah Robbins-Bell; Sponsored by ECVA and Virginia Tech’s Learning Technologies Division and Graduate School; Blacksburg, September 11-12.
- 2010 – 2012: Virginia Software Summits (VSS)– ECVA sponsored all three summits.
- 2014: Renamed the Networked Learning Collaborative of Virginia or NLCVA to reflect the current online learning landscape and the role that the organization plays in that environment.
- 2015:
- Facilitated BoF session at ACCS Conference (Association of College Computing Services)
- Sponsored the IDEAx Unconference Social at Longwood University
- 2016:
- Facilitated session at ACCS Conference (Association of College Computing Services)
- Sponsored the Pre-conference Social for the Mid-Atlantic Magic Conference at UMW
- 2017:
- Facilitated session at ACCS Conference (Association of College Computing Services)
- Sponsored IDEAx Conference held at VCCS Main Office in Richmond
